The epilepsy foundation estimates 3.4 million in the US which includes 470,000 children and 65 million worldwide have epilepsy. In 2017, it was estimated that another 150,000 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy. Despite all the medications available, 4 out of 10 continue to experience uncontrolled seizures while others do not have it well controlled (Epilepsy foundation).
The most commonly used treatment for seizures is medication. Medications control seizures in about two-thirds (64%) of people with epilepsy. Many people have trouble with medication due to all the side effects. Often, people with epilepsy will say that the side effects are “worse than the seizures.” Even if the seizures have stopped, they may be having side effects every single day, making life miserable. Many people have been looking for other options such as CBD oil.
The New England Journal identified the most popular seizure medications and listed some of the most common side effects. Side effects included; sleepiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, depression, weight gain, fatigue, insomnia, psychosis, sedation, drowsiness, irritability, and agitation. An article in Pharmacological Reviews identifies that antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) have behavioral side effects such as depression, aberrant behaviors, irritability, impulsivity, anger, hostility, and aggression
The Epilepsy Foundation relates that people who suffer with epilepsy have higher rates of depression and other mood disorders, social isolation, challenges in school and limitations in living independently, higher unemployment, limitations on driving, and higher risk of early death.
